The pieces are bisque fired first in a kiln, then glazed and put in the first can with propane and heated until red hot and liquid looking, then immediately put into the second can filled with shredded paper, sawdust, whatever will burn which then flares up and the lid is put on tightly and it's left to smolder for about a half hour. It's always a surprise as to what you end up with.
